Live Music: Crask Trio

Chicago-based singer-songwriter Pierce Crask, drawing from influences such as Townes Van Zandt, Steve Earle, John Prine, Bob Dylan, Greg Brown, and Chris Smither, has been entertaining audiences professionally as a solo performer since 1999.

Pierce’s love artists such as Chuck Berry, The Rolling Stones, The Allman Brothers, and the Grateful Dead led him to form The Falling Martins with songwriter/bassist Rich Wooten and guitarist Mike Kirk in 2001. To date, the band has released six albums. Critics have said: “Pierce Crask hits the lyrical nail on the head”(Playback STL), “This is an extraordinary band producing elegant roots rock tinged with blues and country, with slide guitar and imaginative keys”(Ruta 66 Magazine in Spain) and “Pierce Crask may very well be this town’s Randy Newman”(Riverfront Times).

He released his debut solo album, The Road To Millstadt, in 2007, and the follow-up Black Label in 2008. 2012 saw the release of Live at The Shaved Duck to great fan and audience response. The Pierce Crask Instrumental EP was released in 2015, featuring 6 string, 12 string, nylon string, and resonator guitar, and its companion piece, a 5-song self-titled EP, was released in 2018.

For 2023’s “Rising River” album, Pierce was fortunate enough to work with acclaimed Chicago producer and musician Ellis Clark, who assembled a group of some of Chicago’s finest musicians: Marc Edelstein on upright bass, Heath Chappell on drums, Tom Linsk on keys, Mike Conroy on pedal steel, Ron Haynes on flugelhorn, and Brent Roman on percussion. This latest 10-song collection is also his first available on vinyl!

Live Music: Milwaukee Slim Blues Band

Silas McClatcher first started singing as a young teen with his identical twin brother, Paul (d. 2006), in Holly Spring, Mississippi. Silas moved to Chicago in 1965, to Milwaukee in 1975, and back to Chicago in 2011, always for better employment opportunities.

One night Milwaukee’s Legendary Bluesman, ‘Stokes’, called Slim up to sing and it was from that point forward his singing became quick in demand, and he received his official blues name “Milwaukee Slim”.

Milwaukee Slim sat in regularly with Stokes and also with Gene and the Soul Gang as they toured all over WI. He has established a rich resume which includes opening shows in WI for Koko Taylor, John Lee Hooker, and Phillip Walker. Milwaukee Slim performed for the Green Bay Packers (2000), and has performed at many WI and IL Festivals over the years, including WI State Fair (1998 – 2004), Shermanfest, and The Chicago Blues Festival. He has been a member of the Midwest Blues All Stars, The House Rockin Blues Review and his own Milwaukee Slim Band. He has performed with the Hayes Family Blues Band, and recorded with Hubert Sumlin, Billy Flynn, Piano Willie, Jim Liban, Barrelhouse Chuck, Calvin Jones, Smokey Smothers, Kent "The Colonel" Knapp, Barefoot Jimmy, Richard Raven, Leroy Airmaster, The Legendary Blues Band, Little Charlie and the Nightcats. and Shoji Naito.
