Niles Library Geek Out - Lonesome Dove

We are happy to host the Niles Public Library Geek Out! Open to all! Register online at https://nmdl.libnet.info/event/10156118

One writer is obsessed with a classic book and has made another writer read it for the first time. Now you'll listen in as they "geek out" over what they loved, learned, and couldn't stand about it.

The Geek-Out is writers geeking out about literature, plain and simple! One writer has made the other read a classic novel for the first time. Now you get to sit back and enjoy listening in as they discuss what they loved, and what they may not have loved about the book.

Participants are encouraged to read along with the authors and participate during the book club discussion, asking questions and chiming in about your own obsession or newly-found observations.

Authors:

Kathleen Rooney is the author, most recently, of the novels From Dust to Stardust, Lillian Boxfish Takes a Walk and Cher Ami and Major Whittlesey. She is a founding editor of Rose Metal Press, a publisher of literary work in hybrid genres, and a founding member of Poems While You Wait.

Elisa Gabbert is the author of seven collections of poetry and essays. She writes a regular poetry column for the New York Times, and her writing has appeared in the New York Review of Books, Harper’s, A Public Space, American Poetry Review, New England Review, and elsewhere.

This program is in partnership with StoryStudio Chicago.

Live Music: Milwaukee Slim Blues Band

Silas McClatcher first started singing as a young teen with his identical twin brother, Paul (d. 2006), in Holly Spring, Mississippi. Silas moved to Chicago in 1965, to Milwaukee in 1975, and back to Chicago in 2011, always for better employment opportunities.

One night Milwaukee’s Legendary Bluesman, ‘Stokes’, called Slim up to sing and it was from that point forward his singing became quick in demand, and he received his official blues name “Milwaukee Slim”.

Milwaukee Slim sat in regularly with Stokes and also with Gene and the Soul Gang as they toured all over WI. He has established a rich resume which includes opening shows in WI for Koko Taylor, John Lee Hooker, and Phillip Walker. Milwaukee Slim performed for the Green Bay Packers (2000), and has performed at many WI and IL Festivals over the years, including WI State Fair (1998 – 2004), Shermanfest, and The Chicago Blues Festival. He has been a member of the Midwest Blues All Stars, The House Rockin Blues Review and his own Milwaukee Slim Band. He has performed with the Hayes Family Blues Band, and recorded with Hubert Sumlin, Billy Flynn, Piano Willie, Jim Liban, Barrelhouse Chuck, Calvin Jones, Smokey Smothers, Kent "The Colonel" Knapp, Barefoot Jimmy, Richard Raven, Leroy Airmaster, The Legendary Blues Band, Little Charlie and the Nightcats. and Shoji Naito.

Live Music: The Lay Down Ramblers

The Lay-Down Ramblers are a Chicago-based five-piece progressive Electric blues band (2 guitars, drums, bass, vocals/harmonica) , with some pop, rock, and country thrown into the mix. Although the Ramblers formed relatively recently (Fall 2018) after crossing paths at Chicago's famous Old Town School of Folk Music, the members have long performance histories that include national and international tours. Richard P. Bennett, who fronts the band, has sung at venues such as the Kennedy Center Opera House, Lincoln Center, and on and Off-Broadway. The Ramblers put their own spin on some classic songs and have a few cool originals they like to share, too. The Lay-Down Ramblers goal is to make sure everyone in the audience has as much fun as possible.
